Associate GI Clinical Nurse Specialist -Developmental Role

Location: The Wellington Hospital, The Wellington Hospital, Wellington Place, London, NW8 9LE

Hours:  37.5 hours per week Monday – Friday  

Salary: Competitive salary which will be dependent upon skills and experience

The Wellington Hospital is seeking a dynamic and motivated person to join our GI team and work alongside the GI Clinical Nurse Specialist. The ideal candidate will be proactive in seeking opportunities to learn and develop, keen to enhance their skills and knowledge continuously. This role is primarily a development role, learning and developing knowledge and skills and achieving the competencies required to carry out the duties and responsibilities of an associate GI CNS with the support of a senior GI CNS. The candidate will work within the scope of their professional practice. The candidate will be expected to attend further training and courses alongside independent learning. 

Job Duties and responsibilities 

  • The candidate will provide physical and psychological support to patients on a surgical pathway for a range of benign and malignant GI illnesses, including lower GI (colorectal), upper GI and hepatico-pancreatico-biliary (HPB). 
  • Carry out a comprehensive holistic nursing assessment and provide clinical evidence-based information and advice to patients pre, post operatively, and post discharge. 
  • Complete detailed, accurate, legible and timely documentation. Share information with relevant members of the MDT and communicate effectively. 
  • Attend MDT meetings, inpatient ward rounds, outpatient clinics and complete pre and post op phone calls. Liaise closely with Consultants. 
  • In accordance with professional codes maintain own professional development and competence to practice, actively integrating theory and practice. Keep up to date with national and local guidelines, SOPS and policies. 
  • Be a resource to the wider teams, sharing knowledge and information and supporting colleagues, including support staff to promote a cohesive team and the achievement of team objectives 
  • Actively seek opportunities to improve practice and quality. Participate in audits. 
  • Support in implementing ERAS pathway. 
  • Make appropriate referrals where needed. 
  • Manage time and workloads effectively. 
  • Escalate concerns in a timely manner to appropriate persons 

 

Skills & Experience:

  • Registered Nurse Level + GI experience
  • NMC Registration and PREP requirements
  • previous experience of GI surgical nursing and conditions or keen interest to develop skills in these areas 
  • Knowledge of relevant hospital policies and procedures
